Resumen

Lesbian sexuality is a complex issue, with sexual practice – both safe and unsafe – not clearly defined in scientific research. Given the limited body of literature, there is little evidence of transmission of HIV through woman-to-woman sexual activity though there is increasing evidence that lesbians are unaware of any need to engage in safer sex. Within the lesbian community, there is little consensus on how to address the issue of risk. An effective sexual health promotion programme aimed at women who have sex with women is needed to ensure that immunity to disease is not assumed simply by lesbian identity. Lesbians need to be able to discuss sexual behaviour without stigma from within the lesbian community and to protect themselves against the clearest risks of transmission – through contact with semen and sharing of injecting equipment.
